Profiles of top 5 hottest engineering/design marketsHouston-Sugar Land-Baytown TX topped the list of the hottest engineering/design markets in the country with temporary engineering/design spend of $258 million in 2007. Engineering/design employment grew 5,600 in 2007 over 2006, or 7.8%. Engineering/design employment comprises 3.1% of total employment in this metro.Seattle-Bellevue-Everett WA Metro came in No. 2 with $164 million in engineering/design temporary spending in 2007. In 2007, engineering/design employment grew 4,310 here, or 9.3%. Engineering/design employment comprises 3.6% of total employment in this region.Huntsville AL This metro has engineering/design temporary spend of $56 million. Engineering/design employment grew 1,240 in 2007 on a year-over-year basis, or 7.9%. Engineering/design makes up 8.4% of total employment in the area. Technology, space and defense industry industries have a major presence in Huntsville with the Army's Redstone Arsenal, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, and Cummings Research Park.Austin-Round Rock TX totaled engineering/design temporary spend of $73 million in 2007. Engineering/Design employment grew about 1,960 in 2007, or 8.3%. Engineering/design employment comprises 3.4% of total employment in this metro.Dallas-Plano-Irving TX Metro ranked No. 5 on the list of the hottest engineering/design markets with engineering/design temporary spend of $145 million. In 2007, engineering/design employment grew by 2,060 here, or 34.6%. This region has 2.3% of engineering/design share of total employment.Additional observations
  • A large portion of the engineering/design spend is concentrated in California with seven out of the 25 largest spend markets located in the state.
  • Engineering/design opportunity is turning up in smaller, non-traditional locales, such as Johnstown PA, with a remarkable 103.3% engineering/design employment growth in 2007 on a year-over-year basis, or Yuba City CA with 90.6% growth.
  • Huntsville AL is the most concentrated engineering/design hub, ranking higher even than the Silicon Valley and Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville FL. Huntsville has 8.4% engineering/design employment as a share of total employment.
Methodology
The data used in this Insight is based on the annual Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) survey by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).  The calculation of opportunity score is a weighting of total engineering/design temporary spend in a selected market, engineering/design employment growth and engineering/design employment as a share of total employment.  Markets where engineering/design temporary spend was higher, engineering/design employment growth was greater and which had a larger share of engineering/design employment relative to total earned higher scores.  Scores ranged from a minimum of zero to a maximum of 100.
